近年来，福鼎市设立中国水产科学研究院东海水产研究所福建福鼎试验基地，与福建省水产研究所合作“大黄鱼种业创新与产业化开发”项目，打造中国·嵛山岛大黄鱼种苗生态繁育基地，让出产的大黄鱼更具优势。统计数据显示，目前福鼎共有38家大黄鱼育苗场，总育苗水体约9万平方米，年春苗育苗能力近20亿尾，占全国大黄鱼总育苗量50%以上。
